"I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life than the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life." - Chris's (Helen Mirren) comment in the movie, "Calendar Girls."

Party for Howard

O.K. so it was over 100 degrees today. The sun really is trying to kill us! I was hoping to be able to mow my grass, but it has been so hot- the thought of mowing makes me sick. I hate to mow. I can't express how much I hate to mow.....there are not words. These are the days I wish I had a husband. He would do the mowing and trimming and all the other outside stuff. I only like to do the flowers. Just saw the weather and for the rest of the week it is suppose to be over 100. The mow does not look good.

Mom and I went to a party for my old boss and friend, Howard. He got a promotion and he will be traveling to all the Dillard stores in the area to handle their sleepwear depts. Hooray for him! I wish they had promoted him to the grand poo ba of visual. He is an amazing decorator and visual person. The best thing is that he is out of the day to day operations of being an asm.
The party was great fun. Lots of old friends drinking and enjoying each others company. It was so good to see them all. They are all dealing with lots of changes and some seem scared at the prospects of those changes. The fear of the unknown. New boss, new schedules, new ways. It should be very interesting for them in the up coming months.

Little adoption news. Most of the people at the party knew about my plans for adoption. They all were so supportive. I mentioned to Lana I may have her come with me to Russia so that she can interpret for me. She is from the Ukraine. She said she would love to go. I warned her that we literally would be going to Siberia and she laughed and said it's o.k. they speak Russian there. Leslie, who has adopted, could not wait to tell me that adoption is the best thing in the world! I know how much she loves her son and I already knew that she felt that way, but it was so nice to hear her say it out loud and to see it in her eyes. She was so sincere in the support for me that I was very touched. Joy, always so funny, said do you know what you're having. I was happy to say I'm having a girl. Overall, just a really nice time.

Heat Wave

Well, the sun continues to try and kill us. It was close to a 100 today. Crosby, the delicate flower that he is, only wants to go out for short intervals. I can't blame him, but the constant in and out is enough to make me want to go back to work tomorrow! I had to have the roto rooter guy out today as the basement flooded when the drain backed up. It is of course the dreaded tree root in the line. How I hate the unplanned expenses to home ownership!

I saw my friend Pat last night and she is getting around o.k. with her walker, but she is very unsteady. She had an afternoon doctors appointment where they cancelled all her upcoming appointments. They told her she has about 4-maybe 6 months left. She is no longer on any cancer drugs just prednzone to keep her brain from swelling. When the drug stops working she will be home, bed, bound. I pray the drug works as long as it can. She seems to be very resolved to what is happening, but at times weepy, which is only natural. She has not lost her sense of humor, someone asked how she was feeling and without missing a beat she said...I feel like I'm dying.
Kinda puts everything in perspective.

The Sun Is Trying To Kill Us!

Well, it looks like summer has finally arrived. It is so hot here that you don't want to leave your house. Today it was close to 100 and right now at almost 11pm it is 80. I, of course, choose this week to take extra days off. I had the idea that I would get some of the outside house chores done during my time off. Wrong. I have revised what I will be doing this week. I also am praying that my ac doesn't break down. I had to have some maintenance done to it right when it started to get hot here in the spring.....and now it is making this noise. It sounds like the blades are out of sync. I might have to have the ac guy out to the house again.
